Thomas JeffersonPresident Thomas Jefferson strikes a deal with Napoleon in France - $3,000,000 of gold in exchange for a huge chunk of territory west of the Mississippi River (the Louisiana purchase). Napoleon uses this money to put together an army he will then use to set off across Europe to conquer everything in his path. The Bank of England quickly rises to oppose Napoleon and finances every nation in his path, as usual profiteering from war. Prussia, Austria, and then finally Russia all build up an incredible debt in a futile attempt to stop Napoleon.

Jean-Jacques Dessalines
General Jean-Jacques Dessalines declares Haiti’s independence and becomes emperor after crushing the French army sent by Napoleon to re-enslave it following the world’s first successful slave revolt.

Joseph Smith

Fearful that the Haitian revolution might inspire enslaved Africans in other parts of the world to rebel, US Congress bans trade with Haiti joining French and Spanish boycotts. These embargos cripple Haiti’s economy, which has already been weakened by 12 years of civil war. The embargo will be renewed in 1807 and 1809 and is accompanied by a threat of re-colonization and re-enslavement if Haiti fails to compensate France for losses incurred when French plantation owners lost access to Haiti’s slave labor.

NapoleonNapoleon states it is his, "object to remove the house of Hess-Cassel from rulership and to strike it out of the list of powers."

When hearing this, Prince William IX of Hesse-Hanau flees from Germany to Denmark and entrusts his fortune (valued at $3,000,000 at that time) to Mayer Amschel Rothschild for safekeeping.
